Applications

Pharmaceutical Applications

  • Magnesium Peroxide is primarily used as an antacid and laxative in pharmaceutical formulations. When it reacts with gastric acid, it releases nascent oxygen that neutralizes excess acidity and soothes the mucosa, offering long-lasting relief for conditions such as hyperacidity, indigestion, and reflux. Its mechanism also promotes peristalsis and supports intestinal cleansing in short-term bowel preparation.
  • In medical devices and disinfectants, Magnesium Peroxide serves as a strong oxidizing and sterilizing component. It can effectively kill microorganisms on medical surfaces and is commonly combined with other inorganic peroxides like Calcium or Zinc Peroxide in alkaline cleaning agents for sustained disinfection. Additionally, it is used in oral and wound care products such as toothpastes, mouth rinses, and hydrogel dressings, providing antibacterial and oxygen-releasing properties that enhance healing.

Agricultural Applications

  • In agriculture, Magnesium Peroxide functions as both an oxygen supplier and a magnesium nutrient source. It improves soil aeration and provides essential magnesium ions that enhance photosynthesis and crop yield. It is formulated into oxygen fertilizers and soil conditioners to improve root growth, buffer soil pH, and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
  • In aquaculture, it acts as a water quality improver and disinfectant, slowly releasing oxygen into ponds to increase dissolved oxygen levels, oxidize bottom sediments, and suppress pathogenic bacteria. These functions help maintain healthy aquatic environments and reduce the occurrence of common diseases such as white-spot and fungal infections.

Environmental Applications

  • Magnesium Peroxide is widely used in wastewater treatment and soil remediation. It decomposes under neutral or acidic conditions to release active oxygen, oxidizing organic pollutants such as hydrocarbons and sulfides while increasing dissolved oxygen for aerobic biodegradation. It is also effective in removing odor and lowering COD and BOD levels in industrial effluents.
  • For contaminated soil and groundwater, it provides a long-term oxygen source to promote microbial degradation of hydrocarbons and pesticides. Nanostructured Magnesium Peroxide materials further enhance pollutant removal efficiency by increasing dispersion and reactivity, achieving over 95% degradation of compounds like toluene within 5–10 days.

Food and Feed Applications

  • In the food industry, Magnesium Peroxide acts as a flour-bleaching and dough-improving agent, enhancing whiteness and elasticity. It is also applied for vegetable and oil bleaching and as a preservative to maintain color and firmness of fruits, meats, and grains. In feed products, it serves as an oxygen-releasing and antibacterial additive that prevents spoilage and microbial contamination during storage.

Chemical and Material Applications

  • Magnesium Peroxide is used as an oxidant, catalyst, and stabilizer in various industrial processes. In rubber and polymer manufacturing, it promotes cross-linking reactions and acts as a curing agent. It is applied in petroleum refining as a catalyst and corrosion inhibitor, in textile processing as a bleaching and decolorizing agent, and in mining for detoxifying cyanide waste.
  • Emerging uses include serving as an additive in magnesium–air batteries and energy-storage materials, as well as in biomedical composites and intelligent agricultural systems for controlled oxygen release.

    Storage & Handling

    • Store in cool, dry, and ventilated environments away from heat and sunlight.
    • Avoid contact with acids or reducing substances.
    • Keep containers sealed and clean to prevent contamination.
    • Handle with non-sparking tools and follow peroxide safety guidelines.
