Applications

Glycerol has core applications in food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, industrial manufacturing, and emerging energy materials.

● Battery Material Additive: As an electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries, it improves performance and safety. Its derived carbon materials can be used as electrode materials, optimizing electrochemical properties and meeting the needs of new energy battery manufacturing.

● Bio-based Chemical Raw Material: Through biological conversion into 1,3-propylene glycol (yield 40%-50%) and epichlorohydrin, it is used in the production of high-end materials such as new polyester fibers, achieving high-value utilization.

● Injectable Excipient: It serves as a solvent to dissolve poorly soluble drugs, adjusts the osmotic pressure of injection solutions to reduce injection pain, and can also be used to create hypertonic injection solutions for the treatment of cerebral edema. It must meet pharmacopoeial purity standards (above 99.7%).

● Topical Ointment Base: Compounded with petrolatum to adjust the ointment’s consistency and maintain skin moisture, it is suitable for treating dry skin conditions such as eczema and prevents drug drying and inactivation. It is widely used in pharmaceutical topical preparations.

● Flavoring agents for oral preparations: Mask the bitter taste of drugs in syrups and oral liquids, improve mouthfeel, aid in forming and enhance disintegration in tablets and capsules, and adapt to a variety of oral dosage forms.

● Moisturizers for skin care products: Lock in moisture in the skin by absorbing moisture from the air, maintaining stratum corneum moisture, and strengthening the skin barrier function. Molecules containing three hydroxyl groups can absorb five times their own weight in water. They hold over 30% of the market share in creams and lotions.

● Smoothing agents for hair care products: Reduce moisture loss from the skin during use of shampoo and shower gel, improve dry hair, and enhance the user experience. They also reduce moisture loss during cleansing in soaps.

● Baking additives: As a moisture-retaining and moisturizing agent, they maintain the soft texture of bread and cakes and extend shelf life. Typical addition levels are 3%-5% of flour, accounting for 21.4% of demand in the baking industry.

● Candy Softener: In chocolate, it inhibits cocoa butter crystallization, prevents surface blooming, and improves a smoother texture. It also softens and moisturizes gum-based candies, making it suitable for high-end candy production.

● Beverage Flavor Enhancer: It reduces the bitterness and off-flavor of fruit juice and vinegar, enhancing flavor. It also acts as a low-calorie sweetener (80% the sweetness of sucrose) to extend the shelf life of beverages. The dosage is 0.8%-1%.

● Industrial Chemical Raw Material: It is used in the production of alkyd resins and epoxy resins for coatings and plastics. It reacts with nitric acid to produce nitroglycerin, which is used as a raw material for explosives and propellants, a core industrial application.

● Metalworking Lubricant: It reduces metal friction, reduces wear and heat generation during processing, and protects metal surfaces from corrosion and oxidation. It is suitable for a variety of metal processing scenarios.

● Biodiesel Byproduct Utilization: Every 10 tons of biodiesel produced produces 1 ton of crude glycerin, which can be converted into bio-jet fuel (yielding 600-800 kg per ton of glycerin) or used to produce hydrogen through catalytic reforming, contributing to the green energy industry.

In less commonly used industries, it can be used as a lubricant and penetrant in textile printing and dyeing, as an antifreeze (resistant to -40°C) in the automotive and aviation industries, and to improve the mildew and hardness resistance of leather in the tanning industry.
