Applications
Potassium carbonate has a wide range of applications in industries such as new energy, environmental protection, materials science, medicine, and agriculture. Its specific uses are as follows:
- New Energy: It can form a stable SEI film in potassium-ion batteries to improve performance. It serves as an additive in lithium-ion batteries to inhibit electrolyte oxidation. It can also form the electrolyte for molten carbonate fuel cells and a molten salt energy storage medium.
- Environmental: It can remove hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide from coal gas through vacuum desulfurization technology (desulfurization efficiency ≥99%, decyanation efficiency ≥95%), adjust wastewater pH, and form precipitation with heavy metal ions. It can also be made into aerogels for efficient CO₂ capture.
- Materials Science: It can be used as a ceramic binder for superhard composites, adjust the thermal expansion coefficient in dental porcelain powders (optimized value 12-16×10⁻⁶/K), and serve as an activator to optimize the performance of activated carbon (specific surface area ≥1500m²/g). It can also be combined with vermiculite to solve the problem of salt deliquescence for thermochemical energy storage. Pharmaceuticals: It can be combined with polyethylene glycol to increase ibuprofen solubility by 3.8 times and extend its release time in intestinal fluids to 9 hours. It can be used as a pharmaceutical excipient to reduce gastrointestinal irritation and as a mild alkaline reagent in drug synthesis reactions such as Suzuki coupling (reaction yield ≥85%).
- Agriculture: It can be used as a high-concentration, fast-acting potassium fertilizer (containing 50-68% K₂O) for chlorine-sensitive crops such as tobacco and grapes, neutralizing acidic soils (using a dosage of 5-10 kg per mu). A 3-5% solution can be applied through foliar spraying or drip irrigation to enhance crop resistance.
- Glassmaking: It can lower the melting point of glass by 100-150°C. A 10-15% component of the flat glass mix increases transparency by 5-10% and shatter resistance by 30-40%. It can also replace the lead component in lead-free glass and enhance the flexibility of glass fiber. Food Industry: It can be used as a leavening agent to improve the texture of baked goods and adjust the toughness of pasta products (it is a special quality improver for instant noodles, with an addition level of 0.1-0.3%). It can also be used as a wine buffer and a cocoa bean processing aid (food-grade purity ≥99.0%, arsenic ≤2mg/kg).
- Soap and Detergents: It can react with oils and fats to produce potassium soap (used in liquid soaps and shaving creams). It is used as an alkaline additive, pH adjuster (5-20g/L can be added to liquid soap to maintain a pH of 8-9), and water softener in synthetic detergents. It can also be used to produce anionic surfactants such as sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate.
- Potassium carbonate is also used in the printing and dyeing industry (as a mordant and dye fixative) and welding rod manufacturing (as an arc stabilizer).
Storage & Handling
- Store in a cool, dry, and ventilated area, protected from moisture and CO₂.
- Keep containers tightly closed to prevent deliquescence and carbonation.
- Avoid contact with acids and ammonium compounds.
- Handle with protective gloves, goggles, and dust mask.
- Maintain clean working areas to minimize dust accumulation.
Usage Notice
- Avoid inhalation of dust; use suitable respiratory protection during handling.
- Prevent skin and eye contact; rinse immediately with clean water if exposure occurs.
- Do not mix with strong acids or oxidizers.
- Ensure adequate ventilation during handling and transfer.
- In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention immediately.
